Munchies: The Diet of A Champion Female Bodybuilder (2015)

Bodybuilding requires more than just lifting weights. Athletes have to have a high caloric intake. Food provides energy and the ability to maintain a certain amount of muscle mass. Munchies explores Rene Campbell’s diet. There are certain foods that an athlete cannot consume. The high sugar and saturated fat based sustenance has to be avoided by the athlete. Rene Campbell reveals what it takes to create a physique and the nutrition behind building muscle. The athletic training can be difficult, but sticking to a diet is just as challenging. Rene Campbell’s statistics were displayed at the beginning of the video. She stands at 5′ 8″ and 196 lbs. When the video was filmed in 2015, she was preparing for another contest. According to Rene she was at 10% bodyfat. What should be remembered is that female bodybuilders are not in contest shape the entire year. During the off season, body fat increases. Reducing the amount of adipose tissue is for showing definition. Fighting cravings for certain foods can be a test of will power. Then there is a cultural aspect related to food and its role. During the holidays meals serve a significant purpose. Thanksgiving and Christmas are just a few examples of this. An athlete has to make adjustments related to food and celebrations.

Dining out can have some complications. Many restaurants add more salt and butter to their food to enhance the taste. An occasional cheat meal does not harm progress. If the wrong type of food is consumed, then in can hinder fitness goals. Another consideration is the type of supplements to aid in diet.

Rene Campbell explains that in a day she consumes up to 4,500 calories. Then it could go up to 5,000 calories depending on how much muscle she wants to build. The food as a fuel for her training. The misconception is that the more one eats, the more weight they will gain. Calorie consumption must be adjusted to activity level. If a person was eating more than their total amount of exercise, then excessive weight gain can occur. Rene trains six days a week. A 5,000 calorie diet would be required to build a significant amount of muscle mass. Metabolism also plays a role in weight. It can be a factor in how much of the food is converted to muscle or fat. Muscle does have the ability to enhance basal metabolic rate. Rene has to have her meals planned.

She purchases enough food for a two week cycle. Eating out is not an option. That means most of the time Rene Campbell has to cook. This allows her to count calories and have specific nutritional information. One obstacle is the price of food. Consumption of large amounts of food will over time become expensive. Globally, food prices have gone up. Shopping becomes more difficult when prices, amounts, and ensuring proper nutrition are factors.

Rene Campbell consumes chicken, cabbage, rice, and, eggs. She admits that the eating the same menu can become dull. Cravings are hard to resist. The diet has a specific purpose. The chicken provides a great source of protein. Cabbage has fiber and useful carbohydrates. Rice provides more carbohydrates and Rene refers to it as a clean food. That term is a colloquial for a healthy diet. Considerable debate exists on whether or not clean eating is a scientific fact. When Rene eats eggs she excludes the yokes. Her reasoning is that the yokes are too high in cholesterol. Rene Campbell might not be correct here. Eggs as a whole do not increase cholesterol to the degree of trans fats or saturated fats. An egg yoke can have an estimated 1.6 grams of saturated fat. Removing the egg yoke just might be unnecessary. Unless a person is consuming only the egg yoke only, then it could cause a problem . When all the food is gathered, then comes preparation and cooking. The reason many choose to eat out is due to the amount of labor it takes to cook. It was even more tedious prior to modern stoves and electric appliances. Rene Campbell consumes up to seven meals in a day.

The tendency is for people to consume three meals a day. This includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Rene needs food to maintain energy during training. Keeping food frozen for later speeds up the process for preparation. The frozen bags Rene prepares are 130 grams of rice and 130 grams of chicken. Rene then puts it into a blender in the mornings then drinks it. This does not look like the most appetizing drink. Rene even states it tastes bland. Rene Campbell could alter the diet and still get enough protein to assist her. Fish and nuts can be a source of protein. Other vegetables such as green peas, kale, and artichokes can be a source of protein too. There can be variety in an athlete’s diet.

Food and weights are not the only methods used to build muscle. Supplements are used by both athletes and the general public. The industry has grown to be a billion dollar industry. Bodybuilders from across the world have been using and been spokespersons for various companies. Supplement companies are supported by bodybuilders as both customers and employees. Part of Rene Campbell’s shopping involves going to a supplement store. Depending on the fitness objective, what supplements to take vary. Mass gainers and fat burners are common in shops. Rene favors Scitec Nutrition Whey 100% protein and FA Mass Gainer. All supplements are not about gaining mass only. Some has to do with liver protection. Consuming a high protein diet can put strain on the liver. Rene Campbell also note when doing this type of athletic training the body can be put under intense stress. Certain supplements aid in this protection.

Rene Campbell takes morning tablets, supplements for workouts, and pills taken before rest. The bedtime tablets ae mostly for recovery. Rene Campbell does discuss anabolic androgenic steroid use in the sport. She make the point other sports do engage in performance enhancing drug use. The federations do prevent athletes from being honest about it. To a degree the sport in general is more honest about steroids. What should be understood is no amount of anabolic androgenic steroids or supplements will automatically transform a person into a sports champion. Another video would have to be produced to show what goes into athletic training sessions. Supplements are not exactly food. However, they are consumed orally. This is why both drug and food regulation fall under the same public health agencies. More people are taking vitamins, but it is no substitute for eating foods with the required nutritional needs. Supplements are not required to build muscle mass. They are extremely helpful. Competing would be even harder without them. The sport is even more complicated for women due to differences in sex hormones. Estrogen produces more fat in women’s bodies. Metabolic rate also differs in relation to how food is converted. Eat too much without proper training can cause a gain in fat tissue. Consume too little then muscular gain cannot be acquired. Bodybuilding requires knowledge of the muscular system, nutrition, and food science. Rene Campbell does a great job explaining the basics of diet and supplements. Over the years she has become the UK’s most notable bodybuilders.
