Peng Shuai’s status seems to be more of a mystery. Much remains unconfirmed. It was rumored that she was having an affair with Zhang Gaoli. Shuai accused the former prime minister of sexual assault. No trial has taken place or evidence been provided. She retracted the statement later on and previously it was believed she disappeared. However, she made public appearances at the 2022 Winter Olympics. What can be concluded is that either her movement is being restricted or her free speech is being censored. There incident is being used by the West to demonize China. Oddly enough activists at Wimbledon were still wearing “Where Is Peng Shuai ?” shirts. It can be stated with confidence that she is no longer missing as it was in November of 2021. This is less about the abuses of a one party state or victim, rather an ulterior motive. Relations between China and the West are at their lowest point. Anything can be used as an excuse to encourage harsh policies directed at China. Peng Shuai might have been forced to retract her accusation for fear of political retaliation. There is a possibility that a settlement was reached in private so she would not speak. What is known is Peng Shuai can be located and is not imprisoned.

As has been China’s history of punishing and the disappearances of people speaking out against high ranking officials &/or govt’s wrongs, it’s atleast a little comforting to know that she can be located. Or so we’re told.
