This is a biographical documentary about Althea Gibson (1927-2003). Narrated by Maya Angelou, it explores the barriers she broke for African Americans and women in tennis. Althea Gibson not only played tennis, but was a golfer. She had a brief singing career and even appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. She also made an appearance in a John Wayne film. Sadly, women did not gain financial rewards as they do today from tennis. Althea Gibson continued to coach in her later years and inspired many women athletes.
